『Pitman's Typewriter Manual』の第4版(Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, 1901年)を読んでいたところ、タイプライターのキー配列の覚え方(p.100)に以下の記述を見つけた。

The following points will help you to remember where the characters fall:―

1. The figures from 2 to 9 follow in order.
2. The two commonest vowels, a and e, fall in the left half of the key-board, and the three least common, i, o, and u, in the right half.
3. All the vowels except a fall in the second row of the standard key-board, and in the corresponding row of the other key-boards.
4. The letters in the word typewriter fall in a single row,―the second in the standard Key-board A,―as do those in the word property.
5. In the third row of Key-board A, and in the corresponding rows of Key-boards B and C, the letters from D to L fall almost in alphabetical order,―D F G H J K L.
6. In Key-board B, all the fractions fall to the extreme right of the key-board, while all the punctuation marks are towards the bottom right-hand corner.

4番を見るかぎり、typewriterの各文字がQWERTY配列の同じ段にある(propertyも同様)、というネタが、1901年の時点で既に公に指摘されていたことになる。『Believe It or Not』のネタが1936年だから、それより35年も古い。ただ、この記述は、初版の『A Manual of the Typewriter』(I. Pitman & Sons, 1893年)には無かったように思えるので、Isaac Pitman没後の第2版(1897年)か第3版(1900年)あたりで追加されたことになる。うーん、大英図書館へ確かめに行くしかないかな…。
