masakunの日記: eComStation 2.0 Silver Release (RC7) をちんたらダウンロード中だが・・・

日記 by masakun

==== WHATSNEW for eComStation 2.0 Silver Release (RC7) ====

New Features:

* Updated preboot menu system to allow target hardware selection.
* The trace (and other) files are now properly installed by clifi. This will produce more useful data in case the debug kernel is required.
* ACPI is now being installed in the form of a WPI package. This should make it easier to supply updates to an installed system later on.
* Accomodate installation of ACPI Warpin package in ACPI Wizard.
* Added and updated some documentation in ACPI Warpin package.
* Added a Video Driver Wizard, which allows to switch between SNAP, Panorama, GRADD and VGA drivers on an installed system. This will make it easier for people to recover from video problems.
* Added GRADD reset option in preboot menu (via ALT-F1).
* Updated LLAECS: it now should work better and prevent problems with netbios over tcpip. The default dhcp timeout of 0 seconds has been reinstated, but now LLAECS waits until it has a valid DHCP lease (up to 30 seconds) before continuing. This should be less, as soon as a DHCP lease has been obtained.
* EVFSGUI (the Samba GUI) now properly detects the status of network connections. This makes the tool a lot more intuitive than before.
* When ACPI is detected/supported the system will use the SMP kernel immediately from phase 1. This should improve the ACPI success rate.
* ACPI Wizard now applies /F switch to PSCOM.SYS if required.
* A new LVM wrapper is implemented that works around the problems of installing alongside a Windows Vista partition. This will prevent damaging the Vista installation.
* The order of HAB drivers selected in the preboot menu will be maintained throughout the installation, preventing issues with load order of certain SCSI drivers for example.
* It should now be possible to properly install on computers with 4 GB of memory.
* It is possible to install from an USB attached CD device.
* FAT32 support is enabled in phase 1. This makes it easier to read USB memory sticks (for example registration key).
* Beer battery widget will be auto-installed when applicable.
* XWLAN monitor widget will be auto-installed when applicable.
* USB stick holder widget will be auto-installed when applicable.
* It is now possible to boot with VGA, GRADD, Panorama or SNAP from the install CD. The selection will be reflected in the preselected driver in the installation menu.
* Enabled digital audio transfer on CD player by default
* Added DejaVu fonts as Warpin file. Makes upgrades easier.
* Added Workplace Sans font
* Added program icon for ECSRXLIB.TXT
* Enabled eStyler on boot CD
* Added code to FINISH.CMD to cleanup empty logfiles.
* "Readme" Documents in the root of the CD will be copied to ?:\ecs\doc
* Improved logging of available hardware
* Updated Video Driver Wizard, now no longer 'blocks' on resolution change.
* Re-enable selection for USB printer support installation. Will default to 'on' when USB support is enabled.
* Added setting of ini entry to skip non-local drives for scanning of music files.
* New bootlogo and desktopbackground, reflecting "Silver Release" status.
* New Silver desktop background.

[KNOWN ISSUES]

eComStation 2.0 Silver Release English

[ACPI]

The introduction of support for ACPI has meant that many systems now
can properly function whereas this wasn't possible previously. This
is however a very important change in the way the operating system
controls your hardware and therefor can cause problems as well.

For example, we received multiple reports that even starting the
installation from CD results in a TRAP0008 at boot time... If you
experience such problems, the first thing to try is to *disable*
ACPI support in the preboot menu (page 4).

There is a lot of documentation to be found on ACPI, when the system
is installed, this can be found in ?:\ecs\doc\acpi

Relevant information for the boot/install process can be found on the
installation CD: ?:\bootimgs\readme.txt (Appendix D - this can also be
viewed when booting the CD by selecting "Display Online Documentation".

[UNINSTALL SMP KERNEL]

If you experience problems with an installed SMP kernel on your system
and you cannot longer correctly boot your eCS 2.0 volume, it is
possible to revert to the UNI kernel by using the ACPI Wizard.

Follow these steps:

1) Boot the eCS 2.0 installation CD
2) When the install program is started press 'SHIFT+F3'
      (This opens a commandprompt and you can use this for all sorts of
      maintenance.)
3) At the commandprompt type: ACPIWZRD /KERNEL:UNI /TARGET:x
      (x: is your installation volume. Make sure it is accessible, so run
      "chkdsk x: /f" if necessary.)

Notes: - this will only function on an earlier completely installed eCS 2.0
                  RC3 or later volume, as ACPI Wizard expects a certain disklayout.
              - chkdsk and ACPI Wizard will only work when invoked from your CD
                  drive (usually s:) due to path settings in the CD boot environment.
              - if you want to remove ACPI support you can follow similar steps,
                  the command to issue in that case is:
                  ACPIWZRD /ACPI:REMOVE /TARGET:x

[VALID PARAMETERS FOR ACPI WIZARD]

ACPI Wizard can be invoked with several parameters, the possible parameters are:

- nothing: system will be scanned, Wizard will be shown
- /L1: [LOGFILE] {for messages, if empty -> \var\log\acpiwzrd.log}
- /L2: [LOGFILE] {for systemmessages, if empty -> NUL}
- /LOGONLY {just write logfile/systemanalysis to L1 and exit}
- /ACPI: [INSTALL/REMOVE/OPTIONS/CORE] -> CORE will install the WPI package
        -> /SNOOPER: [ACTIVE] {ACPI with ACPISNP.SNP} (not valid with ACPI 3.x!)
                                  [INACTIVE] {ACPI without ACPISNP.SNP}
                                  [NONACPI] {classic snoop.lst}
        -> /APM: [INSTALL] {activates APM for ACPI}
- /KERNEL: [SMP/UNI/W4] {installs respective kernel + required files} (UNI is treated as W4)
        -> if SMP -> /PSDTYPE: [OS2APIC] {will rem ACPI.PSD and activate OS2APIC.PSD}
- /NOPM {suppres PM Popup messageboxes for non-interactive operation}
- /TARGET: if supplied this will be the drive used for installation of the options
                      (like kernel, acpi, config.sys changes etc.)

[SAMBA]

Q: How do I connect to a SMB share?
A: Please have a look at the example script in ?:\ecs\doc\evfs\rexx
      You can easily adapt this and get connected to modern Windows and
      other servers. In the future a GUI for configuring Samba will be
      provided.
A2: In the "Local Network" folder a graphical configuration tool is available.

[RESIZE A DISK IN WINDOWS VISTA]

To resize a partition with Windows Vista, follow these steps:

1) Click on the Start menu
2) Right click on Computer and click on Manage
3) You may get a User Account Control dialog here; just click Continue
4) In the left pane, open up the Storage category and click on Disk
      Management
5) Here, you will find your partitions for your disks. Right click on the
      partition you would like to modify.
6) Click on Extend Volume or Shrink Volume to extend or shrink the selected
      partition.

Be sure to back up any valuable information, because there is a slight
chance that data can be lost when dealing with partitions.

[ICON DRIFT ON THE DESKTOP]

Q) For some reason, I have started getting icon drift with the eCS 2.0 RC1 and
newer versions. The icons drift a small amout to the bottom of the desktop.

A) When using Carston Arnold's Cleanini55.zip and the command
      "Cleanini /c /delall /multipass /restart" the problem of the drifting icons
      goes away. I have confirmed this in both RC1 and RC2. This also includes the
      use of eCenter and eComCenter (WarpCenter) together on fresh installs.

(more details can be found at http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view.php?id=1620)

"Using cleanini I saw a lot of "123456@10", "123456@20" and "123456@XFSB".
And some "123456@1020" entries, and also some "abcdef@XFSB" without a
belonging "abcdef@10" item.
Don't know what "@10" or "@XFSB" exactly means."

Rich Walsh explains:

These identify the window position, colors, & fonts for different
WPS views:

    @10 Icon
    @20 Properties
    @1010 Tree
    @1020 Details
    @XFSB XFolder Status Bar

An easier and more informative way to manage these (and reduce
your os2.ini's size) is to use my FPos utility:
      http://e-vertise.com/rws/fpos080.zip

This util is also included in http://e-vertise.com/rws/rws080.zip
which contains another useful utility, Iconomize, plus some
developer stuff for manipulating the WPS from other apps.

[DISK INTEGRITY CHECK ON 2ND DISK]

Q) I do not want to have the disk integrity check tool touch my 2nd physical
      harddisk, because I want to install to the first.

A) The pre-install disk integrity check tool will check the first and second
      physical attached harddisk, since these are possible installation targets.
      If you want to prevent that drive is touched (for example to write LVM
      fingerprint info) you can disable the disk integrity check in the preboot
      menu. Of course, in that case you may be unable to install due to some
      issue on the harddrive. Another option is to disable the drive and/or
      controller in the system BIOS.

[BYPASS DISK INTEGRITY CHECK ALTOGETHER]

Q) I do not want to use the disk integrity check tool because I know what I
        am doing.

A1) You can disable the check in the preboot menu, on the 'Miscellaneous' page.
A2) If you see the 'checking disks' text during boot you can bypass it by
        pressing Ctrl-Break.

[VIDEO ISSUES]

It is now possible to change the selected video driver fairly easily, without
the need of a complete reinstallation of the system. In case of video-related
problems, you can press alt-f1 during the first bootstage and select option
'D - reset GRADD based video driver to 800 x 600 64K colours.'
This should take you to a proper desktop (probably with incorrect resolution
of course) from which you can invoke the Video Driver Wizard to (re)install
the proper driver. It can be found under Desktop -> Local System -> Install/
Remove -> Video Driver Wizard.
If the reset to GRADD does not work, it is also possible to switch to VGA and
perform the same.

The below is taken from remarks on eCS 1.2R dd March, 8th, 2006

This document lists known issues at the time of the release of the
eComStation 1.2R English CD. Other issues might have been discovered in
the meanwhile, therefor a copy of this file is also available from the
download area of the eComStation website.

Q1. If I specify switches for my SCSI driver in the pre-boot menu they
will not be copied in the config.sys on the installation drive.

A1. This is a design limitation that will be lifted in a future
release. You can use the option to start the maintenance console at the
end of the first phase of the install and manually edit the config.sys

Q2. I cannot find selective install for networking

A2. You can find the component in the folder Local System -> Install/Remove.
Start "Selectieve install for networking"

Q3. The order of the SCSI and IDE devices I specified in the pre-boot
menu is not preserved.

A3. This is a design limitation that will be lifted in a future
release. You can use the option to start the maintenance console at the
end of the first phase of the install and manually edit the config.sys

Q4. During migration my system seems to hang/do nothing in phase 1 or 2

A4. If during phase 1 (booted from CD) there is no system activity for
some minutes the migration may be hanging because you are booted from
CD with a different codepage then the previously installed system.
To work around this, you need to select the same codepage in the preboot
menu of the boot CD.

During (phase 2) migration it is possible that the desktop creation code
encounters undeletable objects. It will popup a message about this to
inform the user. Unfortunately the message is hidden behind the
installer. To get to this message you can follow the following steps.
* Make sure the installer has the focus (titlebar should have a blueish
    shade)
* Press Ctrl-Alt-F11 once or twice till the titlebar changes and
    minimize/maximize buttons appear
* Minimize the installer
* Dismiss the message by clicking the OK button
The installation will continue. To make certain the installation will
proceed normally we advise to refrain from exploring the desktop or the
programs that pop up during the installation.

Q5. During installation I changed the directory for programs. However
the applications installed with the system ignored this.

A5. The applications have their own setting for the installation path
on the same page of the installer. You have to change the installation
path for each application.

Q6. After a migration application XYZ stopped working

A6. Probably application XYZ needs special settings in your config.sys.
Please review your config.sys. A copy of your original config.sys is
preserved in the directory PREVIOUS of your boot system.

Q7. My hardware is not recognized by the installer

A7. New hardware is released every day. It is impossible for us to keep
our database up to date without your help. Please send us instlog.zip
from the \var\log directory and the device drivers for your hardware.
You can send them to support@ecomstation.com

Q8 In the "Multimedia setup" program I switched on "Digital Audio" for
the option "Compact Disc". However I hear no sound when I play an audio-CD.

A8 This option only works with the MCI REXX interface and the legacy CD
player. If you want to use the old CD player start CDPM.EXE from the
commandline.

Q9 When loading infrared port driver I get a trap during boot:

#0168:fff1da1f - 000e:ca1f , 068606a0
9084

Exception in module: IRDA_PHY

A9: enable APM in config.sys
The driver is available from
ftp.ecomstation.com/Driver/I_O_Adapters/irda.exe, if APM.SYS is not
enabled in config.sys the above trap will occur.

Q10: Migration of an existing 'Previous Desktop' (sometimes) fails

SYMPTOMS:
When migrating an installation that already has a migrated (previous)
desktop, the pre-existing 'Previous Desktop' will not contain any
objects but folders.

A10: WORKAROUND:
Before installation move all objects in the Previous Desktop to your
regular desktop

NOTE: This may or may not be the case. See 'what to test' above.
      We are interested to know in which situation this problem arises. Please
      provide (logfile) details when you encounter this problem.

Q11: There is a STARTUP.CMD in the root of the install CD
A11: This is a requirement for having USBMSD support at CD boot time.

Q12: When migrating an eComStation 1.1 system I get a popup message
that asks me for the location of the Desktop

A12: This appears to be a problem in eWorkplace. We are investigation
the issue. To continue the installation you can fill in the location of
the desktop directory. The default location is: ?:\Desktop (replace ?
with your boot drive).

Q13: I installed networking through Selective Install for Networking,
but some icons are missing.

A13: This is a bug in the Peer installer, under some conditions it
fails to create the objects. You can create the objects manually, the
executables for the missing icons are the following:

Audit Log Viewer: ?:\IBMLAN\NETPROG\LSAUDIT.EXE
Error LogViewer: ?:\IBMLAN\NETPROG\LSERROR.EXE
LAN Server Administration: ?:\IBMLAN\NETPROG\NETGUI.EXE
Network DDE and Clipboard: ?:\IBMLAN\NETPROG\NWDDE.EXE
Network Messaging: ?:\IBMLAN\NETPROG\NETMSG.EXE

Where ? is your Network install drive (usually your boot drive)

とりあえず現在 eComStation 2.0 RC7 英語版をダウンロードしているが、シングルCPU の環境では eComStation 2.0 RC6 日本語プレビュー版を消してまでインストールする価値はなさそうだな。なお RC7 にまわされた500GB を超えるハードディスクにインストールできない問題(eComStation Bugtracker 0001782: Is there a 500G limit on HDD size? )は

This requires a complete wipe of your harddisk and then create all volumes with LVM. This will have to be properly documented. We're looking into a more intelligent solution, but until now the above is the only available solution.
