佐藤洋一の『はじめての理系英語リーディング』(アルク、2007年1月)という本を教えてもらったのだが、Unit 6の「QWERTYキーボード」(pp.24-29)の設問設定がトンデモで、かなりミスリーディングだった。

QWERTY Keyboard
Why doesn't the best product always win? Why doesn't the best technology survive in the free competitive market? To answer this question, let's have a look at a classic example of the QWERTY layout of a typewriter keyboard. The QWERTY keyboard was so named because QWERTY is the sequence of keys on the left side of the top row. Early typewriters didn't work well when keys were struck too quickly in succession. To prevent this, the QWERTY was designed to slow down the typing operation.
Dvorak Keyboard
On the other hand, the Dvorak keyboard layout enabled operators to type more quickly and comfortably but it was not as popular as the QWERTY keyboard. The reason was the restrictions of early typewriters as described above. To survive in the free competitive market, products or technologies require more than the best performance. People use products or technologies because they are standard.

もし私がこの設問に対して答えるなら、回答はたとえば以下のようになる。

1. 19世紀のタイプライターでは、印字が紙の裏側におこなわれるため、打っている最中の文章を見ることができなかった。
2. QWERTYレイアウトは、単語の打ち間違いを少しでも減らすために、キーボードを目で見た際に文字が探しやすいように設計されていた。
3. monopoly (市場の独占)。

もちろん私の回答は、佐藤洋一のほしがっている「解答」とは全く違う。上記の英文の内容が完全にデタラメなのだから、当然だ。そもそも、1873年頃に現れたQWERTY配列と、1932年に誕生したDvorak配列との間には、時代からして60年もの隔たりがあるのに、それを「The reason was the restrictions of early typewriters as described above.」なんて書いてしまった時点で、非論理的のそしりは免れない。
本来「理系英語」に求められるのは、一貫した論理性と、それを支える根拠の提示である。何の根拠も示さずに「To prevent this, the QWERTY was designed to slow down the typing operation.」と書くなど「理系英語」でも何でもない。この本に書かれているのは、理系風の単語を使っただけの「トンデモ英文」に過ぎない、ということだ。
